Submitting samples for microscopic examination
To take a sample , cut off a 10-12” section of twig from the end of a branch that includes the biggest mature leaves. It’s extremely important to include the largest leaves available and the twig that the leaf is still attached to because we look at the petiole under the microscope.
In the example to the left, the twig can be cut such that each remaining piece of twig contains 2 leaves.
Hybrid Red/While Mulberry shown here as an example.
Next place each cut section onto a large envelope, such as a 9” x 12” manila envelope. This way you can lay out the best way to send the leaves so that they are flat.
If the leaves are too large (common), fold one leaf gently as shown so that it is still attached and the leaf is overall flat.
If the leaves must be folded, fold just once in the middle.
Place between 2 layers of cardboard with one paper towel in between on each side as shown.
Note- Multiple layers of leaves and twigs may be layered as long as they remain flat.
The finished setup will look like a sandwich of cardboard, paper tower, leaves, paper towel, and then cardboard again as shown to the right.
Place into the large paper envelope and ship cheapest way. Do not use a bubble mailer or plastic envelope as they cannot breath and the leaves will not dry properly.
Please do not ship expedited, just regular shipping is fine as it may take a couple weeks for us to get to the samples.
We are opening up for sample submission from anywhere in the USA for no cost while our project is ongoing. If you would like to submit a sample, please download, print, and complete the below Mulberry Sample Submission Form along with your sample.
Summary Directions:
Samples should include a 10” section of twig from the end of a branch that includes mature leaves. It’s extremely important to include the twig that the leaf is still attached to because we look at the petiole under the microscope. Leaves and twigs should be as flat as possible. At least 2-3 leaves is best.
Press leaves between 2 cardboard pieces (about 8.5” x 11”) with paper towel in between. Then insert into a paper/manila envelope. The 9” x 12” envelopes or larger work quite well. Please do not ship expedited, just regular shipping is fine since it may take a couple weeks to get to the samples.
PS - We encourage the use of TreeSnap for picture uploads if possible. This allows for other researches to gather data and information on trees for ongoing conservation efforts.
