Who Are We
We are a small home based nursery in Newark, Delaware. We grow trees right in our back yard, and have a secondary larger 11 acre site in southeastern PA where we plant trees for seed stock, research, and conservation.
We are a certified Delaware nursery, licensed under the name Willow Creek Nursery LLC. We have all our trees inspected for pests and diseases by DNREC to ensure quality in the seedlings you bring home.
The website name is in honor of our long term goals and origins. Our first tree growing experience was from a camping trip and a few Chinquapin Oak acorns we brought home from Virginia. This taught us about the importance root development and care.
"Naked” refers to our focus on what is often hidden - the roots. We strive to form excellent root growth for each tree. Each winter, every single tree that is being up-potted is bare-rooted and inspected for proper root development and stem growth. We also have a very strict grading system and cull aggressively to ensure that the trees we have on sale are the best of the best.
We are a Certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat because we focus on nurturing insects, bugs, birds, snakes, raptors, bats, any all other forms of wildlife.
The trees we sell are grown following the same organic principles we use in our home garden, so we don’t use any synthetic chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
Does organic ideology matter for growing trees? We think so. After all, why would you want to plant a chemically treated tree with possible herbicidal residue on the leaves, branches, soil, or roots when your goal is to feed the local ecosystem (particularly insects) with native trees?
We continuously learn from those around us who support ecosystem conservation and restoration. In particular, a lot of our early inspiration for the design and goals of our nursery came from our long list of favorite books:
Doug Tallamy (The Nature of Oaks, Nature’s Best Hope, Bringing Nature Home),
Akiva Silver (Trees of Power)
Peter Wohlleben (The Hidden Life of Trees)
Zach St. George (The Journeys of Trees)
Donald Edward Davis (The American Chestnut:An Environmental History)
Donald Culross Peattie (The Natural History of North American Trees)
